92-Year-Old Seeks Another Term Ruling Cameroon

Central Africa’s Cameroon has voted in a presidential election that could extend the 43-year rule of 92-year-old Paul Biya. He is the world’s oldest serving head of state, according to the Associated Press.

The single-round election held today is expected to return Biya for another seven years in office.

He faced 11 challengers, including 79-year-old Issa Tchiroma Bakary, a former government spokesman who resigned in June to join the opposition. Bakary has gained attention for calling an end to Biya’s long rule.

Analysts predict Biya’s re-election due to his strong control over state institutions and a divided opposition.

Francois Conradie of Oxford Economics said Biya’s “formidable electoral machine” is likely to secure him another victory.

Meanwhile, voters have voiced frustration over unemployment, poverty, and the rising cost of living.

The Constitutional Council has until October 26 to announce the final results.
