No Bus Stop Shade? CitCo Says “Modern Bus Stops” Are Coming

Belize City Council says it is preparing to upgrade bus stops across the city as it expands its electric bus programme. The concerns followed reports received by News 5 of an elderly resident struggling under the heat while waiting for a bus.

Miller called the concern fair and said the council has a plan already in motion.

According to Miller, the city will soon construct what he described as a “very modern” bus stop in front of Battlefield Park in central downtown. Additional bus stops and upgrades to existing shelters are also planned as more electric buses are added to the fleet.

But if you’re wondering why bus sheds were not already included in the original project, Miller said, “This e-mobility project started out as a pilot. And it was simply a pilot to be able to inform us of the viability of electric buses or the functionality of electric buses in Belize. And so it had a limited budget of sorts, and that was not necessarily factored in at the time. But as I said earlier, it’s something that we have been discussing.

He added, “I think the e-mobility pilot project is here to stay, and you know just how much our residents appreciate the service.”

Now that the service has proven successful, he said the council is preparing to invest in the supporting infrastructure.

“As residents deserve an upgraded bus service, they also deserve not to have to wait for buses in a place that is not conducive,” Miller added.
