Public Service Minister Says SARA Legislation Coming

Concerns remain among public officers over government’s proposal to transform the Belize Tax Service Department into a semi-autonomous revenue authority, with workers seeking greater clarity on how the transition could affect their jobs. Minister of Public Service Henry Charles Usher says the process is still being ironed out and productive meetings are being held, explaining that new legislation must first be finalized before decisions are made on where employees will ultimately be assigned during the restructuring.

“I think that some meetings have been held since the last report was made. The- there’s work on the legislation. I’m not sure when that legislation will be tabled, when it’ll be looked at, but that is the first step. We have to look at the legislation, and then of course, we have to look at the transition for those pu- public officers, whether they will stay in the tax service or the new entity, or they will go into the wider public service.”
