Several Feared Dead, Many Trapped After Powerful Earthquake Strikes Southern Japan

A powerful 6.8-magnitude earthquake struck Japan’s southern Kumamoto Prefecture on Tuesday, leaving several people feared dead, dozens injured, and many others trapped after a shopping mall partially collapsed.

According to Japanese media, the collapse occurred at Aeon Mall Kumamoto, where emergency crews are searching for survivors. Authorities said between 20 and 30 employees remain unaccounted for, while the number of missing customers is still being determined.

Local broadcaster NHK reported that more than 50 people were treated for injuries at one hospital, while several passengers aboard a high-speed train were also hurt. Police sources, cited by local media, said several people were killed in the shopping mall collapse, although officials have not yet released an official death toll.

The quake also damaged a highway bridge, disrupted rail services, forced the closure of Kumamoto Airport, and caused additional damage to the historic Kumamoto Castle, which was still recovering from the devastating 2016 earthquakes.

Officials are also investigating reports that a gas leak may have triggered an explosion at the shopping mall following the earthquake, though the exact cause remains under investigation.

The Japan Meteorological Agency has warned residents to remain alert for strong aftershocks and possible landslides over the coming week as rescue efforts continue.
