Resident Threatened With Pepper Spray Over Noise Complaint 

During Belize City’s public consultation on proposed liquor licensing reforms, one resident argued that the real problem isn’t the law; it’s enforcing it. The resident said he was threatened with pepper spray by police after confronting a nearby club still blasting music at four in the morning. 

“I took a video, I called the police, and they said there’s nothing they can do because they have a permit,” he said. The resident said he went to the establishment himself to ask why it was still operating after 4 a.m. and demanded to see the permit personally. 

“I was met with police who took out pepper spray and warned me to step away. I asked to speak to the supervisor. That never happened,” the resident added, “I end up calling back the police and made an official complaint.”

City residents have increasingly been citing late-night noise, unclear licensing conditions and inconsistent enforcement as the core problem, not a lack of existing rules.
