Foreign Ministry Approves Limited Waiver for Carillo Investigation  

Belize has agreed to partially lift diplomatic immunity in connection with an alleged domestic dispute, involving Kennedy Carillo, now under investigation by Canadian authorities. In a release issued today, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs says it first received a report on Wednesday from Belize’s State Representative to the International Civil Aviation Organization. Shortly after, the Embassy of Canada in Guatemala sent a diplomatic request asking Belize to approve a limited waiver of immunity so Canadian authorities could investigate the matter. After reviewing the request and the information provided, the Foreign Ministry approved the limited waiver and formally notified the Canadian Embassy by diplomatic note. Government says it has also carried out the necessary checks to ensure the safety and security of everyone involved. Belize says it will continue cooperating fully with Canadian authorities and is reaffirming its zero-tolerance policy toward all forms of gender-based violence.
