Luciano Acosta died following a drowning incident over the weekend at Honey Camp in the Orange Walk District.

Acosta and 41-year-old Eliseo Escalante went fishing around 3:00 a.m. on Sunday after spending the evening socialising with relatives. Investigators believe both men had consumed alcohol before getting into a canoe.

According to reports, the canoe overturned, and Acosta was found lying face-up on the edge of a small island in the lagoon. Police do not suspect foul play.

Escalante managed to swim to nearby mangroves and called for help.

Honey Camp Ranch confirmed his death in an online statement, remembering him as someone who supported the ranch for years. “Luciano was someone that was always true to himself, always authentic, and willing to share all that is Belize with everyone he met,” the ranch said.

A friend and neighbour also paid tribute online. “Can’t believe you are gone, my double neighbour. It was a sad day for us around the lagoon yesterday. Your dad was in so much pain. You left a void in the neighbourhood. May your wonderful soul rest in eternal peace,” the friend said.
