Belize Basketball Wins Bronze At CAC

Good evening, I am Paul Lopez with this week’s installment of Sports Monday, brought to you by the National Sports Council. The Belize Softball Federation is declaring loudly that male softball is back. And that was most evident over the weekend during the Men’s Softball National Tournament. The event was held on the newly refurbished Camalote Softball Field, a venue widely regarded as the home of softball in the Cayo District. The pump and circumstances associated with the field’s new look is being reserved for the Women’s Nationals two weeks from now.

 

A compliment of four male softball teams went head-to-head across six matches over the course of two days. And on Sunday afternoon it all came down to the top two teams, The Guardian Bombers and the Wolfpack Softball Club. Now, some would argue that the Bombers went into the finals with a bit of a disadvantage. They played two games on the same day and clawed their way to the finals to play the defending champion, Wolfpack, a team that won both of their matches on Saturday and went into the final match well rested. It was clear from the onset that Wolfpack was the most dominant team. They scored four runs in the first three innings and capped off the fourth and final inning with an impressive six runs, bringing their total to ten. Wolfpack’s impressive finals run was marked by multiple homeruns, including this one from Rene Flowers. The officials employed the mercy rule in the fourth inning and called off the match with a score of ten runs to zero, declaring Wolfpack your 2026 Men’s National Softball Champions.

“It means a lot for us, because we came undefeated. We fought from day one. We got together, brought out the pitchers, start work from January and prepare for this season.”

“One of the things that make the team different is our coaching staff and management, always behind us, pushing us, making sure we prepare, fully equipped, everything just set to make sure we do what needs to be done out there.”

 

Flowers’ impressive performance earned him three individual awards, including the Most Valuable Player award. The winning team walked about with a thousand-dollar cash prize. The sub champions, the Guardian Bombers received a five hundred dollars check. Bombers’ Shane Williams received an individual award for Most Runs Batted In. Again the women’s nationals goes down two weeks from now, inside the same venue.

 

We continue to follow Belize’s Junior Men’s National Basketball Team as they compete in the Central American and Caribbean Games in the Dominican Republic. Team Belize suffered a deflating loss on Saturday at the hands of regional powerhouse Puerto Rico. That game ended one hundred and eleven to sixty-eight points.  But, all hopes of a podium finish was not lost. Today, Team Belize competed against Mexico for the bronze medal. That one ended with victory for Belize. Yes folks our junior national basketball team are the Central American and Caribbean Bronze medalists, having defeated Mexico eighty-one points to seventy.

 

We also send our congratulations to Trent Hardwich, a Belizean sailor who is also competing in the CAC Games. He placed tenth in both his races over the weekend and sits at ninth place overall.

 

And last, but certainly not least, we highlight Dominic Beaino, a young and promising MMA Fighter who is preparing to represent Belize in Colombia. Beaino secured two gold medals over the weekend during a jujitsu competition in San Ignacio, a testament to his versatility in the ring.
