Got a Traffic Fine Text? Read This Before You Pay that Fine
Getting a text about a traffic fine? Police say don’t touch it; it’s not from them.
The Belize Police Department is warning the public about a fraudulent traffic violation notice circulating through text messages and online, falsely claiming to be issued by the Department. The message alleges recipients committed a traffic offence and directs them to pay through a website, threatening licence suspension or legal action if they don’t comply.
“The Belize Police Department wishes to make it abundantly clear that this message is a scam and was not issued by the Belize Police Department,” the department said in a statement.
The public is being urged not to click any links, share personal or financial information, or make any payments through the referenced website. Police say cybercriminals are building websites designed to closely mimic official government platforms.
The Department’s direct advice:
- Don’t respond to the message or click any links
- Don’t make payments through the website
- Verify traffic notices only through official Government of Belize channels
- Report suspicious messages to police
