Dean Flowers Challenges Belizeans to Oppose BTL Board Decision
The proposed BTL-Speednet buyout may still have to go before the Public Utilities Commission, but Public Service Union President Dean Flowers says Belizeans should not sit back and wait for regulators to decide the country’s future. Flowers is urging Belizeans to speak out against today’s decision by BTL’s Board of Directors, arguing that ordinary citizens still have power in this process. He says if enough Belizeans are unhappy with the proposed acquisition, they can make their voices heard and force the issue into the national spotlight. Here is how Flowers put it.

“It is a shame and the Belizean people who are sitting in their offices, sitting in their homes, who should be seated shoulder to shoulder, locked arms, in these offices, at the offices of the Social Security, they are the ones empowering. We are dealing with a cabal here. We are dealing with the leader of a party who is running a cabal to seize the wealth of this country and we are dealing with the leader of this part who wears another hat as the prime minister and until we as ci5rizens understand that the future of this country lies within our hands, we will continue to see the little we have stolen from us. This is the beginning of it, not the beginning but the continuation of it. Displacement of BTL workers will occur. I nuh the ask yo, because we see it happening in the public service. We see how public officers are being displaced by hand picked political people coming from Smart and from the lee PUP cronies business. So you will see it happen again. At some point in time we have to ask ourselves will we continue to complain or when will we collectively decide to make that call for peaceful resistance, by sitting in the hundreds in the offices of SSB to disrupt services, sitting in by the thousands in the office of BTL and ultimately if the policy decisions, if the constitution does not change where accountability is concerned, then we need to call for civil unrest. I cannot put it an nicer than that. That is where I am as a citizen.”
Today’s impromptu demonstration outside BTL headquarters also saw representation from the Christian Workers Union.
