Police have detained a bus driver as they investigate the fatal traffic accident that claimed the life of sanitation worker Andrew Smith on Lord’s Bank Road this afternoon. The incident happened around 1:15 p.m. Police say Smith was working near the back of a garbage truck that had been parked along the roadside. According to the initial investigation, Smith was standing near the left rear side of the truck when he allegedly fell into the lane of traffic. Moments later, a bus struck him. Smith, a sanitation worker from the Belize District, died as a result of the collision. His death has once again highlighted the risks faced by sanitation workers who carry out essential duties along busy public roads. Police have detained the bus driver and collected urine samples as part of the ongoing investigation. Authorities have not yet said whether charges will be brought. The investigation remains ongoing.
