Forensic Pathology Report Reveals How Samuel Chi Died

Forensic pathology has confirmed missing fisherman Samuel Chi died of asphyxia due to drowning. 

According to ASP Stacy Smith, the report did not indicate signs of violence or trauma on Chi’s body. 

“We are guided by the report of the forensic pathologist, which gave the conclusion that it was asphyxia due to drowning,” Smith said. 

Chi’s body was recovered last Tuesday near Hick’s Caye, roughly eight miles north of Belize City, a day after his fishing companion, Albert Vaccaro, was found alive but dehydrated at sea. The two men vanished while travelling from Caye Caulker to Belize City the Sunday before.

The investigation remains open. Smith said she has not yet spoken with the lead investigator on the case.

“What I do know from the first time that Mr. Vacarro was located, he was not able to provide much information at that time. I don’t know if anything has changed since,” Smith added. 

Vaccaro has still not given a formal statement to police as he continues his recovery. Investigators previously said the vessel the men were using was not seaworthy and that weather may have played a role.
