Orange Walk Family Needs Support

A brief church service turned into a devastating loss for one Orange Walk family on Sunday, after fire tore through their wooden home near Sparrow Street and San Lorenzo Road while they were out.

Blanca Estela Pena, sixty-three, and her daughter Elia Meza, twenty, stepped out for evening service. By the time they made it back home, just before six o’clock, flames had already taken hold. Firefighters got the blaze under control, but not before the structure was almost completely lost. The house was not insured.

Nobody was hurt. Investigators are still working to determine what sparked the fire.

For Meza and her mother, the immediate concern now is rebuilding and starting largely from scratch. The family is asking the public for zinc, cement and lumber to begin repairs, along with clothing, baby essentials and Pampers, and whatever monetary donations people can spare.

Anyone wishing to assist can contact Elia Meza directly at 620-1951.
