BCCI Denies Refusing Cabinet Meeting

The Belize Chamber of Commerce and Industry (BCCI) says it never declined to meet with Cabinet over the proposed BTL-Speednet acquisition. It says calling any suggestion otherwise is a mischaracterisation.

A statement from the chamber says that its president and CEO were unavailable for Thursday’s proposed meeting because both are part of the official Belize delegation travelling to El Salvador through August 14th for the signing of the Belize-El Salvador Partial Scope Agreement, a trade deal the chamber says opens new commercial opportunities for Belizean businesses. The BCCI says it requested a short reschedule because of that prior commitment, not out of reluctance to engage.

The Chamber says it’s ready to meet with Cabinet, alongside Belize’s other social partners, at any time before Cabinet’s final decision on the deal, scheduled for August 18th.

On the acquisition itself, BCCI says its position hasn’t changed. The Chamber says its concerns around market competition, transparency, governance, and regulatory oversight remain unanswered, and it continues to push for direct responses from government.
