Daly Keeps Belize City Guessing on Mayoral Race

With the Belize City PUP municipal convention fast approaching, the spotlight is shifting to area representatives and the side they’ll ultimately choose. But Collet Area Representative Devin Daly says he is in no rush to make that call. Amid growing speculation and internal party chatter, Daly insists his decision will come down to one thing: which mayoral team can deliver the most for Belize City residents. From cleaner streets and better garbage collection to parks, playgrounds, and jobs, Daly says results matter more than political alliances. As for whether he supports Eluide Miller or Allan Pollard, he says Collet’s delegates are still weighing their options, and Belize City will have to wait a little longer for an answer.

“My conversation with my delegates in Collet has been what and the direction, who and the direction we believe is best for my constituency. And I hope that this is actually aired. We want to have a relationship with the council whereby our jeans, our streets, our garbage, our parks, our playgrounds, all of that is properly consulted with me as an era rep for Collet and other era reps across the city. And truthfully, employment also has been one of the challenges when it comes to collaboration. So these are the things that is truly motivating me in terms of supporting the candidates and the mayoral candidates and the council candidates. So that is where my direction is more towards. How does the possible slates benefit positively in terms of forecasting benefit my constituency? That is where my focus is, my constituency.”

“From your deliberation with delegates, which one of the mayoral candidates best fit Collet?”

“Both of them are good candidates. I know right now our media house wants us to come out and say this is who we’re supporting, that is who we’re supporting, but it’s a democratic process. And I’ve had multiple conversations with my delegates and it’s only about seventeen or eighteen more days. I’m pretty sure you’ll know where Collet stands.”

 

Political insiders say Daly’s Collet delegates are expected to fall in line with the choice of his closest ally, Anthony Mahler. The PUP’s Belize City convention is set for August 30.
