Ranguana Caye Killing Leads to Murder Charge
A deadly stabbing at Ranguana Caye has now led to a murder charge, but the victim’s family says police have not gotten the full story. Thirty-three-year-old Belize City fisherman Mauri Gomez has been arraigned for the August twelfth killing of fellow fisherman Jose Arteaga. He is also charged with wounding Arteaga’s brother, Marvin, who remains hospitalized. Police say the violence followed an altercation among crew members, but relatives strongly reject that account. They say Jose was attacked from behind while retrieving diving equipment thrown into the sea, and that Marvin was stabbed while he slept. Tonight, investigators are still trying to determine what led to the deadly attack.
