Dengue Threat Grows as Stagnant Water Builds Up
The rainy season may be cooling things down, but it is also creating the perfect conditions for dengue-carrying mosquitoes to multiply. The Ministry of Health and Wellness is urging Belizeans to take action now by checking their homes, yards, workplaces, and communities for stagnant water, where the Aedes aegypti mosquito breeds. Health officials say dengue can range from mild illness to severe disease, and in some cases, it can be fatal. Symptoms include high fever, severe headache, pain behind the eyes, muscle and joint pain, skin rash, bleeding, and difficulty breathing. The ministry is advising anyone experiencing symptoms to seek medical attention immediately. Residents are also being reminded to empty or cover containers that collect water, clear drains and yards, remove old tires, bottles and cans, use mosquito repellent, wear long sleeves when possible, and keep doors and windows properly screened. The ministry says dengue prevention is a shared responsibility and continues to work with communities and local authorities on surveillance and vector control.
