“Lizarraga Must Go”: UDP Stands with Trade Unions
The United Democratic Party (UDP) stands with Belize’s trade unions in demanding the immediate resignation of Belize Telemedia Limited (BTL) Chairman Markhelm Lizarraga.
In an official press release, the party maintained that public assets require public accountability following the board’s approval of the acquisition.
The UDP noted it was the first entity to demand Lizarraga’s removal, arguing that Cabinet’s subsequent rejection of the deal does not erase the board’s original decision or relieve the chairman of responsibility.
Calling for complete public transparency, the opposition is pressing for full disclosure of all financial expenses associated with the failed deal, including legal, advisory, valuation, and due diligence fees. The UDP declared that the situation comes down to a fundamental issue of governance and reiterated that Lizarraga must go.
Union Senator Glenfield Dennison also noted that his vote of no confidence in Lizarraga extends beyond the recent deal, pointing back to an earlier multi-million dollar cable proposal.

Prime Minister John Briceño defended the board, stating they did nothing wrong and were simply conducting further due diligence rather than finalising a decision to purchase SpeedNet. Briceño also stated that he does not agree with the unions’ view and gave no indication that his administration intends to bow to their demands.
Replacing BTL’s board chairman is ultimately up to Prime Minister John Briceño.
