Lionel Urbina Faces Caye Caulker Murder Charge

A police officer accused of a deadly confrontation on Caye Caulker has now received the prosecution’s case against him. Twenty-year-old Lionel Urbina appeared without an attorney in the Belize City Magistrate’s Court, where prosecutors handed him one hundred and forty-five pages of evidence and seven DVDs. Urbina faces murder, attempted murder and other serious charges in connection with the stabbing death of nineteen-year-old American student Kevin Matthew Depaz and the injuries of two other people on Caye Caulker during the early hours of June thirtieth, 2025. He remains on remand and is scheduled to return to court on October twenty-first for a preliminary inquiry in San Pedro. Lionel Urbina is the younger sibling of Jane Urbina, an expectant mother, who was shot and killed following a prison visit on June twentieth.
