“Changed Circumstances” Kill BTL-Speednet Acquisition
One of the biggest potential shake-ups in Belize’s telecommunications industry is officially off the table. Belize Telemedia Limited has abandoned its plan to acquire Speednet Communications Limited, ending a proposed deal that could have brought two major players in the local telecom market under common ownership. In a letter dated August twenty-fourth, BTL formally notified the Public Utilities Commission that it had withdrawn the submissions filed in February and no longer intended to pursue the acquisition. The company said it entered the process hoping to strengthen the telecom sector, improve efficiency, encourage investment and deliver better services to consumers. But BTL did not explain exactly what derailed the deal, saying only that a “change in circumstances” forced the company to walk away. With the proposed transaction no longer being considered, BTL says the PUC can now end its review. The decision leaves Speednet operating independently and raises fresh questions about what changed behind the scenes after months of regulatory consideration.
