An early-morning journey on Remate Road ended in tragedy for a Corozal family. Fifty-year-old David Chan was killed, and two others were injured after a van reportedly crashed into a trailer being towed by a tractor early Tuesday. Police are now working to determine what caused the deadly collision and who should be held responsible. As the investigation continues, authorities have issued a notice of intended prosecution. Here is what police are saying about the case.

“Police have issued a notice of intended prosecution in connection with the ongoing investigation into a traffic accident which resulted in the death of 50-year-old David Chan and injury of Waldir Cuello and Melita Chan. The investigation commenced at around 5:30 AM on Tuesday, eighth September, when officers in Corozal were advised of a traffic accident on Ramate Road on the outskirts of Yo Chen Village. The investigating officers reported that on the scene they observed an extensively damaged trailer and tractor, as well as an extensively damaged van. Initial investigation has indicated that the tractor was towing a trailer which was being driven by David Chan when the van collided into the trailer, resulting in the fatal injury of Mr. Chan and the injury of Melita Chan, who was on the tractor.”

 

Police have issued a Notice of Intended Prosecution on Waldir Cuello. Both Melita Chan and Cuello remain hospitalized.
