Belizean Athletes Shine Overseas With Gold Medals

Good evening, Belize, I am Paul Lopez with this week’s installment of Sports Monday, brought to you by the National Sports Council. We begin tonight’s coverage with highlights from this past weekend’s Belize Tourism Board September Criterium.

 

Cycling skills at all levels were on full display along the Central American Boulevard on Sunday as riders competed in fourteen different categories. In the end, some of the top names in Belize’s cycling arena came out on top, including Derrick Chavarria who secured gold in the Open Elite category. Byron Pope who took home gold in the Masters category. Devyn Major rode away with gold among the junior riders and Ahmaad Cherrington who secured gold in the youth category. We heard from Gold Medalist Chavarria and Cycling Federation President, Glen Flowers.

“Deh bway really mih the put the pressure on. Jyven did a really good job with the run. And I honestly had to stay in my zone and try nuh mek the gap get too big. The breeze super hard.”

“It is a good turnout today. The location is great. The terrain is good. There is not too many bumps in the road and it is a good stretch for them to go around. The most races I enjoyed was the little kids. Those are the future. We need to invite them more and have more races for them to come aboard.”

 

From the Central American Boulevard we take you to Colombia where Belizean MMA fighters are outperforming their opponents at the GAMMA Pan American Championships. Two Belizean fighters went three and zero for gold medals. Dominic Beaino is brining home the one hundred and seventy pound title, while Jalen Perez won gold in the one-hundred-and-forty-five-pound division. Head coach Silvino Riverol said Beaino recorded three quick finishes during the tournament, including what he described as the fastest finish of the competition.

“To say that I am  feeling overwhelmed and emotional is an understatement. I am very proud. The six guys we brought here gave it their all and we are going back with two gold medals, which is historic in Belize.”

 

Sports Monday has been closely following Belize’s performance at the 2026 CODICADER Games in Honduras.  One hundred and eighty-three Belizean athletes participated in several disciplines for both male and female categories. Team Belize finished the games with two gold medals, three silver and four bronze medals. The gold medal performances came from Oshane Munnings of Bishop Martin High School in the Boys High Jump and Jaaden Williams of Toledo Community College in the Boy’s Triple Jump.
