AI Is Getting Smarter, But Can It Be Controlled?

As artificial intelligence becomes smarter and more powerful, warnings are growing that the technology could move faster than governments and companies can safely control. China, meanwhile, says slowing AI development is not the answer.

China’s Foreign Ministry responded to calls from leading U.S. technology executives to slow the development of advanced AI, saying that fear-mongering and confrontation could make it harder for countries to establish rules for AI. 

The comments came after executives including Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei and OpenAI CEO Sam Altman called for greater caution as AI systems become increasingly capable.

The debate is unfolding as the United States and China compete to lead the global AI industry. Chinese AI companies have narrowed the gap with their U.S. counterparts, making AI an increasingly important part of the rivalry between the two countries.

Chen Yixin, China’s Minister of State Security, recently warned that AI could be used to spread fake audio and video, launch cyberattacks, leak sensitive information and threaten political and institutional security.

His warning reflects growing concern in Beijing about how the technology could be misused. But Chen did not call for AI development to be slowed. China says AI should continue to develop, but with safeguards and international cooperation.

For now, both sides appear to agree on one thing: AI is becoming too important to ignore. The debate is over how quickly the world should move forward, and how much control it can maintain as the technology advances.
