Who Gets to Tell Belize’s History? Magical History Tour Reaches Final Stop

Belize is only days away from celebrating its 45th year of becoming a sovereign land. That is forty-five years of landmark events, memories, and achievements. But there’s even more in the years that led to September 21st 1981.

Over the past few weeks, the National Institute of Culture and History (NICH), in partnership with Historian/ Ambassador Assad Shoman, has been bringing decades of history to the ears of students across the country in their nationwide initiative ‘Belize @45 Magical History.’

Today, Magical History reaches its final stop at the Corozal House of Culture, and ends an eight-stop journey that has pushed Belizeans to confront the history that led to Belize’s independence.

The tour began in Punta Gorda on August 26 before moving through Dangriga, San Ignacio, Benque Viejo del Carmen, Belmopan, Belize City and Orange Walk.

Students across all districts have been encouraged to question and discuss historical events and experiences that shaped Belize’s national identity. Public forums have also given residents and community leaders an opportunity to exchange perspectives on the country’s past and its connection to the present.

The premise driving the tour is to engage the next generation, who will carry the baton of Belize’s history and pass it on to those who come after them.
