Immigration Officers Strengthen Border Screening Skills

Every person entering or leaving Belize passes through a system designed to verify their information, record their movement and flag potential security concerns. Now, about one hundred and twenty-five immigration officers are sharpening their ability to use MIDAS, the digital platform that manages traveler information at the country’s ports of entry. The International Organization for Migration led the specialized training, which covered everything from processing arrivals and departures to protecting personal data, conducting secondary inspections and handling unusual cases. Technical experts also assessed the system following recent hardware upgrades and the integration of Advance Passenger Information. The European Union funded the initiative as part of a wider effort to strengthen Belize’s southern and western borders. The next step is a detailed report identifying technical gaps, corrective measures and ways to improve the system’s long-term operation.
