Independence Weekend Is Here: Drive Sober, Get Home Safe

Independence weekend is here, and with celebrations happening across the country, including Orange Walk’s Carnival Road March, authorities are reminding motorists to make it home safely. 

The message from the Ministry of Infrastructure Development and Housing is simple: practise safe driving this weekend. 

The Ministry of Infrastructure Development and Housing has said road safety remains a top priority heading into the holiday. “There’s no shame in designated drivers to get you all home safely,” it stated. 

The push follows a road safety awareness stop the Ministry of Health and Wellness ran Saturday in downtown Belize City, part of its “Stay Alive, Arrive Alive” September campaign. 

The activity, organised by the National Drug Abuse Control Council and the Belize Police Department, engaged motorists, cyclists and pedestrians on responsible road use. 

“Road safety is everyone’s responsibility,” MOHW  said.

Whether heading to Orange Walk for Carnival, travelling between towns, visiting family or simply going out to celebrate Belize’s 45th Independence, motorists are being urged not to drink and drive. 

If you plan to drink, arrange a designated driver or another sober way home before the celebrations begin.
