“Belize Will Be Vindicated”: Briceño on Guatemala as Belize Marks 45 Years

Prime Minister John Briceño used Belize’s 45th Independence anniversary to remind Belizeans of the country’s sovereignty. During his address, Briceño addressed the pending International Court of Justice hearing, with oral presentations in the Guatemala-Belize case set to begin in February 2027.

“For too long, our borders have been disputed by our neighbor, Guatemala,” Briceño said. “We look forward to the end of this process when we believe Belize will be vindicated, and we can strengthen and enhance relations with the government and the great Guatemalan people.”
The ICJ will also hear oral presentations in the Belize-Honduras case once the Guatemala matter concludes.

“Today, more than ever, it is time for Belizeans to show the world who we truly are. We are a small nation, but we possess tremendous strength,” Briceño added. “We are a diverse people, but united by a shared love for this beautiful land we call home.”
Meanwhile, Leader of the Opposition Tracy Panton struck a different tone at the same ceremony. She said, “Our next chapter must be one of people-centered leadership and national renewal, restoring integrity in government and building an economy where hard word, innovation, enterprise are rewarded.”

Panton reminded the Briceño government against overreach, stating, “ A strong government listens and respects descent. It must never mistake a parliamentary majority for unlimited authority. Its mandate is to ease hardship, restore confidence, and strengthen institutions that will outlast any administration.”
