Funky Kingston Brings a Taste of Jamaica to Belize City

A new restaurant and bar has opened at Mile 4 on the Philip Goldson Highway, offering Jamaican and Belizean food, Caribbean-inspired drinks and reggae music.

Funky Kingston held its grand opening this week, attracting a large crowd to the new venue, with indoor and outdoor seating and views of the Caribbean Sea

The menu includes Jamaican and Belizean dishes, including Jamaican patties, jerk chicken, oxtail stew and hudut, along with a selection of Caribbean-inspired cocktails.

The business is part of the same venture as Isabella Caye and Sandbar Caye. Director Rob Begrand said Funky Kingston also gives guests a place to eat and have a drink before heading out to the private islands.

“This is part of our overall venture as well, which is Isabella Caye and Sandbar Caye.”

For Begrand, the opening marked the completion of about 14 months of construction.

“I wear my heart on a sleeve and we have been at hard construction for 14 months. So, to actually sit at the bar, enjoy a nice rum and coke, see the people enjoying food and actually put a tear in my eye.”

Patrons also enjoyed the setting and music.

“The ambience, the music, anything by the sea we love,” said Deon Leslie.

“I like the atmosphere from the sea. The music, the vibe is very good,” said Karen Vernon.

Begrand said the business is sourcing locally where possible and wants to keep its prices affordable.

“We have been conscious of our dollars. We want to be conscious of your dollars too. We don’t want to price ourselves out,” he said.
