After years of leaks, mould and repeated promises, renovations are finally underway at the Raccoon Street Police Station. Home Affairs Minister Julius Espat says crews have started the first phase of a major refurbishment aimed at transforming the deteriorating building. The project seeks to create safer, healthier conditions for the officers who work there and the public they serve.

“The Raccoon Street project is one of the buildings that has been left for too long and it needs to be refurbished. It’s a very expensive project to be refurbished. And so we had a budget. There is a small budget in the Ministry of Infrastructure that deals with government buildings, and we haven’t utilized it as yet for this year, and so we made a decision to use it for that. And so we are now refurbishing the roof as a first stage. And we have done the design to do the exterior cladding, which will be great for rains. And then after that we’ll have to go inside because the building is in a really bad shape. There are molds. People are getting sick, and it’s not in a good position for human habitation.”

After a viral video captured rainwater flooding the Raccoon Street Police Station in 2025, then Home Affairs Minister Kareem Musa acknowledged that quick fixes were no longer enough. The station needed a complete overhaul.
