Why Does Alexis Rosado Still Represent Belize?

Serious criminal charges and a high-profile diplomatic role. That combination is raising questions about Ambassador Alexis Rosado’s continued involvement in representing Belize on the international stage. Rosado, who faces multiple criminal charges stemming from sexual assault allegations dating back to 2021, remains part of Belize’s legal team at the International Court of Justice. The situation has sparked debate over public trust, accountability and the standards expected of those who represent the country abroad. Today, we asked Foreign Affairs Minister Francis Fonseca why Rosado continues to serve in that capacity despite the pending case.

“Listen, I certainly understand the different views people have. The bottom line is, our agent and our team determined that a number for years ago, determined that Mr. Rosado’s continued presence on the team as co-agent was important to the work that lies ahead. So, they felt and requested that he remain on the team. So that remains the position of the government. Obviously, ambassador Rosado is charged with very serious crimes and he is innocent until proven guilty. So the government’s position and view, was and is that his involvement in terms of this case, helping us, as we approach the final lap of this case, was important, and we are following the advice of our agent and the legal team in that regard.”

Minister Fonseca clarified that Rosado is no longer posted as a diplomat and only serves the country on its ICJ team.
