Transport Officials Rethink Oversized House Moves on Weekends

The deadly highway collision involving a prefabricated house has forced transport officials to rethink how oversized structures move across Belize’s roads. Chief Executive Officer Chester Williams says his management team met this morning as public concern continues to grow. Among the proposed changes are banning the movement of prefabricated homes on weekends and requiring officials to inspect the structures before they begin their journey. The recommendations are not yet final, but Williams says the ministry is looking for ways to tighten oversight and make these transports safer.

“In our management meeting this morning we made mention of the fact that perhaps what we will do hereafter is that every time they want to move a house, even though they have an annual permit, they will have to contact the department of transport. The department of transport will go and inspect the house before they go and move off from where they are leaving, to ensure they are in compliance with the permit. So that is something we discussed this morning as a possibility. Likewise in the press release issued by the association, perhaps that is another thing we can look at, to exempt movement of houses on weekends, particularly Friday night and Saturday night. There are things, perhaps, we can do, to enhance, but we will still yielded to Cabinet to see what will be Cabinet decision moving forward then we can go from there. we can make some recommendations.”

Ultimately, Cabinet will have to discuss these recommendations and make a determination.
