Should The Abortion Option Be Available for Pregnant Teenagers?
As Belize observes Adolescent Pregnancy Prevention Week, one of the most debated questions surrounding teenage pregnancy is whether abortion should be an option for adolescents facing an unplanned pregnancy. Supporters point to the challenges young mothers often encounter, from interrupted education to financial hardship. But health officials say Belize’s law is clear. According to Dr. Natalia Beer, teenage pregnancy alone does not qualify for a legal abortion. Instead, she says the focus must remain on prevention, expanding access to education, support services and reproductive health care to help young people avoid unintended pregnancies before they occur.

“Abortion or abortive outcomes as we refer to it in medical terms can occur at any age, adolescence are not exempt from that. We have in country the criminal code that allow for the provision of reasons for a medical termination if there is a serious negative effect on the family then a woman can request the services, but no woman should have the need to resort to abortion if they have the correct information on how to make their decisions in protecting themselves from unwanted and unplanned pregnancies and if they have access to services, especially contraception.”
Globally, the adolescent birth rate is forty-four per one hundred thousand girls. The Statistical Institute of Belize’s MICS survey reports a birth rate of fifty-eight, while the Ministry of Health’s data shows a rate of 38.8 per hundred thousand.
