PUP Victory Inevitable? Bradley Rejects Barrow’s Prediction
The 2030 election may still be years away, but former Prime Minister Dean Barrow is already predicting another PUP victory, pointing to continued division within the UDP. Former UDP mayor and standard-bearer Darrell Bradley, however, says that outcome is far from guaranteed. He argues that political parties naturally face difficult periods and warns opponents against mistaking the UDP’s current challenges for its permanent defeat.
Darrell Bradley, Former UDP Mayor
“I do not. I think that a political party is made up persons. Politics is something that I have been involved in since I have been involved in since I was seventeen years old. The nature of politics is that people who are very strong-minded comes together and it is often a coalition of persons with very strong views. I remember when I was active with the UDP holding opinions, certain person within the party and myself backed heads on a regular basis, so to say that we are not gelling is really to add nothing to politics. That is the nature of politics. And so, I believe that the UDP is a formidable political party. I believe that the UDP has been one of the forerunners championing democracy in Belize. We have a multiparty system and that is a necessary ingredient to our democracy. So, there may be those who want to see the UDP go down, I am not one of those persons. There may be those who celebrate the fact that the UDP is facing challenges, that is the nature of life.”
