Challenges for TV Ramos Highway Upgrade
We also asked Moody about the Thomas Vincent Ramos Highway. The upgrade of the highway has faced unexpected setbacks, forcing contractors to revisit portions of the roadway that had already been resurfaced. According to the Chief Engineer, water infiltration beneath the existing road base led to defects in several sections, creating potholes and surface depressions that required corrective work. He says the issues stem from the condition of the decades-old roadway structure, which was retained as part of what was originally designed as a resealing project.

Evondale Moody, Chief Engineer
“ In terms of the T.V. Ramos Highway, we have works that are continuously going on that project. We have been doing works there, I think since 2024, and it’s not completed. There was a section between the Mile Six junction and also Seal Grass where we had water infiltration into the base of the material, um, where we had to redo that section. It’s approximately 3.8 kilometers, but it’s not 3.8 continuously. It’s different sections. And so as you may be aware, as I’ve mentioned before, that project was just a resealing project. We did not do anything with the existing formation of the highway. And so we were just utilizing the existing structure that was there, that was built in 2000. And so what we found out after we had done a section with hot mix is that we had water penetrating into the base, and because that material had been there for quite a while, it has disintegrated, and it was creating some potholes in some area and, and also some deflections. And so in an effort, since the contractor is still there, we, liaise with the contractor for him to go back in and do some remedial works on those sections that have shown signs of defect and for him to correct those since he’s already still working there.”
