National Infrastructure Work Continues Despite Rain

Despite a week of heavy rainfall across the country, the Ministry of Infrastructure says work continues on several major projects with only minor disruptions. While wet weather has slowed some activities, particularly concrete work, Chief Engineer Evondale Moody says contractors have adjusted their schedules to keep projects moving forward. He also provided an update on two major bridge replacement projects in Belize City, where demolition is expected to begin before year’s end.

“We have several projects currently ongoing by the ministry in an effort to improve our infrastructure countrywide. And yes, we have been having rainfall consistently since last weekend. Um, in terms of its impact on these projects, we have had some minimal impact. It hasn’t been that significant because the works are currently ongoing, to be honest. And so it’s only with the maintenance of the areas where the contractors are currently working whereby we are being affected in terms of the limited works that we can do because of the rainfall. We anticipate, based on our work program, that both bridges will commence their demolition no later than this December first, um, so that those works could continue into the new year with the construction of the replacement of both bridges. So that’s where we are in terms of the bridges in Belize City. And we have had minimal effect in respect to the rainfall because it’s a different type of work that they’re doing. Only that they cannot pour concrete during the rain, and so that’s where we’ve had some, some little delays there. But other than that, other works could still continue on those two structures.”
