Another Belize City Bridge to Be Demolished and Rebuilt

The bridge along Regent Street West in Belize City will be demolished and replaced after an assessment found that it is in poor structural condition. The additional work is being incorporated into the project to establish a permanent crossing at Hyde’s Lane as part of the wider Swing Bridge replacement plan.

Evondale Moody, Chief Engineer in the Ministry of Infrastructure Development and Housing, says Regent Street West will be closed to allow for the demolition and construction of a replacement bridge that will connect to the new crossing over Haulover Creek.

“We’ll close Regent Street West to construct the new structure and connect it to the bridge we’re building across the Haulover River,” Moody said.

The Hyde’s Lane bridge was initially intended to be temporary, but Moody says it will now remain as a permanent structure to facilitate traffic movement through the city.

“The project is approximately, I would say, about 75% completed. We have done a hundred and twenty feet of a hundred and sixty feet in terms of the deck itself for that bridge structure,” Moody said.

Work is continuing on the northern approach, which will connect to North Front Street and Hyde’s Lane, while additional construction is planned for the southern side. Moody says the completed structure will have two approaches, one on East Collet Canal and another on West Collet Canal.

Work on the Hyde’s Lane bridge is expected to be completed between November 15 and 30.
