Could You Survive For Three Days Without Essential Services?

Could your household manage for three days without electricity, running water or access to basic supplies? That question is at the centre of renewed emergency preparedness guidance in Europe, where governments are encouraging residents to prepare for disruptions to everyday services.

Earlier this week, the United Kingdom launched a public awareness campaign advising households to keep basic supplies, including non-perishable food and drinking water, in case emergencies disrupt services such as electricity, water and internet access.

The EU’s recommended emergency supplies include:

  • Water: Minimum of 5L per household members.
  • Food: Non-perishable food that can be eaten without cooking, along with a can opener.
  • Lighting: A flashlight and spare batteries.
  • Communication: A battery-powered or hand-crank radio, a mobile phone, a power bank and a printed emergency contact list.
  • First aid and medication: A first aid kit and essential personal medication.
  • Hygiene: Soap, toilet paper, and other personal hygiene products.
  • Tools and safety items: Basic tools, a whistle and spare keys.
  • Clothing: Weather-appropriate clothing, sturdy footwear and rain protection.
  • Important documents and money: Copies of IDs and other essential documents, along with some cash.
  • Pet supplies: Food, water and other necessities for household pets.

The campaign recommends preparing to manage for three days and brings the UK into line with European countries that already promote similar guidance.

The strategy covers risks ranging from extreme weather and natural disasters to cyberattacks and geopolitical tensions.

For Belize, the advice comes as the National Emergency Management Organization (NEMO) continues to remind residents that disaster preparedness must extend beyond the annual hurricane season.

National Emergency Coordinator Daniel Mendez recently warned that residents should not wait until a storm approaches before making preparations.

“You must remain prepared at all times because you just do not know what will happen,” Mendez said. “You don’t wait until a hurricane appears or the storm appears on the horizon to start to make your plans.”

NEMO Urges Year-Round Disaster Preparedness

NEMO has also urged households to prepare family emergency plans, assemble emergency supply kits and familiarise themselves with evacuation procedures.

The European guidance offers another reminder of the importance of household readiness, particularly when emergencies interrupt access to basic services.

For Belizeans, preparing in advance can include keeping essential supplies available, securing important documents, and knowing where to find reliable emergency information.

With disaster risks extending beyond hurricanes, the question is whether households are taking the necessary steps to prepare before an emergency occurs.
