Placencia Cries for Help Before Its Beaches Are Lost

The Placencia Village Council is calling for urgent action to address severe beach erosion along the Placencia Peninsula, warning that the deteriorating coastline threatens tourism businesses and the wider community ahead of the upcoming tourism season.

The council said it met with local tourism stakeholders and business owners on October 30 to discuss the beach erosion, which it says has been greatly worsened by sargassum.

Participants agreed that the erosion poses both an economic risk and a potential health hazard.

Stakeholders are exploring practical ways to help restore the beach in the short term, including identifying the worst-affected areas and looking at options for replenishing the sand. The council says these efforts will require meaningful government support and funding.

The council also plans to schedule an urgent meeting with relevant government ministries to discuss the proposed solutions and the need for government funding.

According to the council, Placencia’s beach is one of Belize’s most valuable natural assets, helping make the peninsula a major tourism destination and attracting millions of dollars in foreign investment.

The council warns that continued deterioration could affect visitors’ experiences, tourism operations and the long-term sustainability of the peninsula’s tourism industry.

“Our immediate priority is to work collaboratively to identify and implement feasible short-term measures with proper funding from Government that can help improve the condition of our beaches as the tourism season approaches,” the council wrote.
