More Scam Calls! Bankers’ Association Warns Public

The Bankers’ Association of Belize is warning the public about ongoing telephone and messaging scams targeting bank account holders, with fraudsters impersonating banking representatives to obtain confidential financial information.

The Association reminds the public that legitimate financial institutions will never solicit confidential information from customers.

The latest warning follows a similar scam warning from the Central Bank of Belize in October, after it received multiple reports of scammers impersonating officials through Google Meet.

According to the Association, scammers may use deceptive phone numbers, email addresses or recognised corporate logos on messaging platforms to appear legitimate.

“During these unsolicited interactions, fraudsters attempt to deceive customers into disclosing sensitive personal details, including account credentials, passwords, and password reset codes,” the association stated.

Customers are advised not to click on unexpected links sent through text messages, or emails, or share confidential banking information with anyone claiming to represent their financial institution. The Association also recommends enabling multi-factor authentication, such as soft tokens or authenticator apps, where supported by their bank.

Anyone receiving an unexpected call, message or email requesting immediate action regarding their account should disconnect and verify the communication directly with their bank.

Customers should also use the institution’s official website rather than relying on contact details provided in the suspicious communication.

Anyone who suspects they have received a fraudulent call or believes their banking credentials may have been compromised should contact their financial institution immediately and report the incident.
