Could a Dedicated Task Force Help Curb Rising Crime?

The United Democratic Party (UDP) is proposing the establishment of a dedicated gun violence task force within 30 days as part of a broader plan to address rising crime, strengthen community policing and prevent young people from being recruited into gangs.

Opposition Leader Tracy Panton outlined the proposal, which includes a coordinated effort involving the Belize Police Department, Belize Defence Force, the Coast Guard, and Customs and Immigration to address the trafficking of illegal firearms, ammunition and other illicit goods.

“We must apprehend both the gunmen and those who facilitate and finance organized crime,” Panton said. “We must pursue the suppliers, the organizers, the financiers, and the facilitators behind trafficking.”

The UDP says tackling organised crime also means investigating those who may be enabling it from within the system.

“Credible allegations of official involvement must be investigated independently. No public official, no member of the police high command should be shielded from scrutiny,” Panton said.

The party also wants stronger community policing and support for vulnerable families, arguing that crime prevention must begin at the community level.

“Community groups must help identify needs and deliver solutions, not simply be consulted after decisions are made,” Panton said.

The UDP says its crime plan also includes improving working conditions for police officers, creating fair opportunities for job security and promotion, and expanding access to fitness programmes and mental health support.
