New Committee to Investigate Belize’s Energy Crisis
The Senate has approved a seven-member Special Select Committee to investigate Belize’s energy sector, including power-generation shortfalls and supply failures over the past 10 years.
The committee will examine the factors contributing to the country’s energy challenges, including power purchase agreements, fuel supply contracts, electricity imports from Mexico’s Comisión Federal de Electricidad (CFE), emergency procurement and the oversight of the Public Utilities Commission.
Its mandate will also include reviewing energy policies, technical reports and financial records.
The committee will have the authority to request documents, summon witnesses and engage technical specialists to assist with its investigation. Its proceedings will include public hearings, which are expected to be broadcast live.
The motion calls for the public hearings to be completed before the end of March 2027, after which the committee is expected to submit a report for public release.
The investigation is expected to examine decisions and developments across successive administrations with the aim of identifying the decisions and challenges that have contributed to Belize’s energy crisis.
