NTUCB Backs Union Senator’s Solo Demonstrations

One person standing up in protest can still send a powerful message, and National Trade Union Congress of Belize President Ella Waight says that right must be protected. Weighing in on Union Senator Glenfield Dennison’s solo demonstration, Waight has thrown her full support behind his decision to take a public stand, reminding Belizeans that the right to protest is guaranteed by the Constitution. She says citizens must be free to exercise that right. Here’s her response.

“Kudos to Senator Dennison. That’s his right as a citizen, and we would want other citizens to understand that’s your right. Any Belizean, every Belizean has a right to hold a sign and say, ‘My water bill is too high, do something about it’. Whatever situation that they have going on, whatever they want to protest, that is why we have a constitution that allows us to do that. So Senator Dennison is doing just that, taking his rights to the streets where he can protest as a one-man protest, and he’s doing his thing. And of course, we’re asking other Belizeans to do the same if they want to join him. But again, he makes it very clear, it’s a one-man protest, right? He’s doing his thing. But other Belizeans, if you feel you need it, you need to vote, and protest, and take action, do it. The NTUCB will be doing it Friday, so join us on Friday.”

The NTUCB President added that while individual actions like Senator Dennison’s campaign draw vital attention to corporate accountability, collective public participation is key to driving policy change.
