Santa Familia Fatal Roadside Accident Claims Mother’s Life; Injures Daughter
A Santa Familia single mother of five was killed and her young daughter injured in a roadside accident on Friday, August 8. The incident has brought attention to the community’s outcry for road safety in the Cayo District village.
Police reported this afternoon that the mother, 49-year-old Elizabeth Rivera Carias, and her 9-year-old daughter, Janet, were standing at the roadside when a grey GMC pickup lost control and hit them.
Assistant Commissioner of Police Hilberto Romero said the driver, Godson Evorwoshie, “has since been arrested and charged with Manslaughter by Negligence, Causing Death by Careless Conduct, and Drove Motovehicle without Due Care and Attention… A urine sample was obtained, and that has been taken for testing.”
Vice chairman of the village, Silas Sabal, told News 5 that a resident saw the GMC pickup truck travelling on the wrong side of the road before swerving to avoid a Toyota and veering into the victims.
“When I saw the mother on the ground, I touched her and immediately realised that her muscles were like jumping. When I touched her to feel for a pulse, I felt that the pulse was fainting rapidly,” Sabal said.

He stated that he attempted to do chest compressions but quickly realised that the mother’s chest was “all broken up”. She later succumbed to her injuries. “It was just too much blood coming out from her spinal area of her back, her lower back.”
Sabal explained that the mother and daughter were leaving a relative’s house and heading home when the incident happened. “She was just a couple feet away, like a hundred yards away from her house. She mih almost reach home when this whole incident happened.”
The tragedy has reignited calls for road safety measures. The village’s vice-chairman, Sabal, said, “We appreciate that right now they’re fixing the road, but we need that, but we need something to get done to slow down traffic too because we notice drivers; they’re getting crazy.”
Sabal added that the daughter is currently at the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital in stable condition but “still don’t know her mom has passed away.”
Community members and the Village Council have organised fundraising drives, including a Dolla Drive, to raise funds for the daughter’s medical expenses.
