Police are tackling the rising number of knife-related attacks across Belize. Officers are focusing on the illegal possession of knives, particularly at night and during public events.

“Any incident that involves violence is of concern to us, and I have instructed my commanders to ensure that we target those instruments, especially at night, or during the time that it is not permitted to be,” Police Commissioner Dr Richard Rosado said earlier today. “But it is of concern to us; once it involves violence, it is of concern to us.”

Under the law, carrying a knife with a blade longer than three inches between 8 p.m. and 5 a.m., or at public gatherings, is illegal without a valid reason.

Offenders face fines up to $500 or six months in prison.
