Swipe and Ride: E-Bus Goes Cashless in Belize City

The Belize City Council’s e-buses now have a cashless payment system. Today, the council launched its public transport e-rider card powered by DigiWallet. This is another significant step in the e-bus pilot project funded by the European Union and the United Nations Development Program. Here is more about the new payment system and how it works.

“Well as you know we have been working along with the EU and UNDP along with other government agencies to get the sort of payment system in place rather than having cash system. When you use cash it creates a very slow way of moving the people in the bus and when they exit. So we believe this system will create greater efficiency, faster, easier way of getting on the bus and making that payment for the bus.”

“So the system is really easy. You will be able to pick up a ridership card at the Belize City Council. But our first distribution will occur this Saturday at the Belize City Council down town sale so you can pick up a card at the Digi Wallet booth. Bring along a valid ID and a recent bus receipt. It has to be no older than three days. You provide those document and you can issue the card to you. At the booth you can provide us with the funds and we will apply it to our card. You can also visit anyone of our Digi Wallet agents and any one of our Digi Stores. Once you get your card and get on the bus, all you have to do is tap.”
