Energy is also on the agenda for Prime Minister Briceño’s meeting in Mexico. After the massive blackouts that hit in 2024, officials say they’re working to lock in energy deals with Mexico to avoid another nationwide outage. The aim is to keep the lights on and the economy running, without any surprises. In addition, PM Briceño says Belize is working on become more energy self-sufficient.

“That is a part of the agenda we are going to talk about, energy. We want to ensure that Mexico will continue sell enough energy so that we will not have the situation we had the last year. But also importantly, Belize is working towards having more sustainable forms of energy. We just put out a call for up to eight megawatts of solar and the government is working on another forty megawatts of solar and there are other companies that want to come into Belize to produce energy. Our plan it so become self sustainable and to do as much as we can to have enough sustainable forms of energy. At the same time we want to make sure we are connected to the Central American grid and that we can produce enough to sell into Central America or Mexico.”
