The conversation surrounding the possible extension of Mexico’s Tren Maya into Belize is gaining momentum. On Friday, Prime Minister John Briceño met with Mexico’s President Claudia Sheinbaum and Guatemala’s President Bernardo Arévalo during a trilateral meeting where the rail project was included on the agenda.

While no official statement has been made on the outcome of that discussion, Church Senator Louis Wade is voicing his support for the initiative.

Wade said, “So now, the Tren Maya is a brilliant economic idea, because it connects Mérida to Cancún, Tulum, and all the way down to Chetumal, our neighbour. The next logical step is Belize. So when the discussions started, I became very excited. Wherever the train needs to go, if it is San Pedro, the mainland, or whatever it is, we need the train, and I have to become an advocate to say we need this kind of development in Belize.”

According to Wade, the project could boost Belize’s tourism industry by tapping into the same markets that Mexico has successfully attracted.

“Mexico is able to get European as well as American tourists; tourists from all over the world go to Mexico and in particular Cancun, which is so very close to us. Why can’t they come to Belize?” Wade said.

Last week, Transport Minister Dr. Louis Zabaneh told News 5, “I think it is a no brainer. I know our Prime Minister has been pushing very hard. He worked with the previous president of Mexico and now with the present president. They have invested billions in that Tren Maya for the Southeastern part of Mexico coming o our border. They have interest in moving towards Guatemala.”
