Man Charged for Grievous Harm in Brandon Baptist Shooting

Police have made their first arrest in connection with the deadly shooting that claimed the life of known street figure Brandon Baptist earlier this year. Back in February, twenty-nine-year-old Shevaughn Gotoy was hit with eight charges, including attempted murder for the three survivors. Now, he’s facing two additional counts of grievous harm. So far, no one else has been charged in Baptist’s murder. Gotoy’s family, however, is speaking out, taking to social media to defend his name. They insist he’s not tied to any gang and acted in self-defense, using a licensed firearm to protect himself and others. Assistant Commissioner of Police Hilberto Romero has more on the arrest and ongoing investigation.

“Reference to the shooting incident that occurred on the thirty-first day of January 2025, we arrested and charged Shevaughn Gotoy for two counts of grievous harm.”

“These are the first that happened on the night that Brandon Baptist was killed during the football game at Marion Jones. That is the only charge, or had someone else been charged before, no?”

Hilberto Romero

“That’s the only charge for now.”

Reporter

“That’s the only charge. So you all have determined that the killing of Brandon Baptist was self defense?”

Hilberto Romero

“Yeah, that file was sent to the DPP, and that is the directive that came, that only this person be charged for grievous harm.”
