Belize City Plans for Stronger Defence Against Disasters

Belize City is stepping up efforts to prepare for climate-related disasters. The City Council, National Emergency Management Organisation (NEMO), and the United Nations have partnered on a workshop focused on the impacts of hurricanes, floods, bushfires, and heatwaves, and how better planning can protect residents.

“This initiative really is looking at how we can support, through our partnership, how we can create a resilient community in our city,” said NEMO’s national emergency coordinator.

“Belize City is a coastal city. We face a lot of disasters, and we have seen over the past couple of years it is not only related to hurricanes and floods, but now you have bush fires, extensive flooding, and heat waves,” Mayor Bernard Wagner said.

He added, “It is important as a city that we bring all of these together, working in collaboration with NEMO, CEMO, the business community and putting together a plan.”
