“Hangar” Closed to Vehicles After Resident Complaints
If you’ve been to Hangar lately, you’ve probably noticed something different, massive concrete flowerpots now block vehicles from entering the popular seafront spot. For years, Hangar has been a go-to hangout for fishing, swimming, and yes, even some not-so-legal activities. But after countless complaints from residents, and a petition backed by former Police Commissioner Chester Williams, the Belize City Council has stepped in. The area is now officially closed to vehicular traffic. Earlier today, we spoke with Deputy Mayor Eluide Miller about why this decision was made and what it means for the future of Hangar.
On the phone: Eluide Miller, Deputy Mayor
“This was not a decision that was taken lightly, and I’ll share exactly why I say that, mainly because it comes after years of engagement with the residents of this area, the area considered the Home Park area. Residents have repeatedly raised concerns about safety and their quality of life in the area and as a council, we have a responsibility to ensure that they live well in the area that they call their home. So, an original petition was submitted to the council back in April 2022, and at that time the council advised the residents to engage with other key stakeholders and including the Belize Police Department before any consideration is given by the council. So, they reverted back to us in July 2024 when they returned to the council with a formal letter that was supported by the then Commissioner of Police who acknowledged the increase in criminal activity in the area and as part of that correspondence, even recommended that the council considers restricting vehicular access to the space, in support of their crimefighting efforts.”
